The round has been marked by <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/api\/files\/document\/print\/en\/statement_20_1612\/STATEMENT_20_1612_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">considerable friction<\/a> between the positions of the European Union and the United Kingdom, which remain distant even as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2020\/06\/15\/eu-uk-statement-following-the-high-level-meeting-on-15-june-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">final end of<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/european-union-and-united-kingdom-forging-new-partnership\/brexit-brief\/transition-period_it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transitional period<\/a> approaches: as of December 31, the United Kingdom will no longer be, for all intents and purposes, a member of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n<p>The tensions of this round of negotiations have been marked:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/prime-ministers-words-on-eu-negotiations-7-september-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">political position<\/a> of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who on Sept. 7 issued an ultimatum for the conclusion of negotiations by Oct. 15, reiterating as satisfactory the option of a &#8220;no deal.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>by the presentation (on Sept. 9) of an &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cbp-9003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internal market<\/a>bill,&#8221; a proposed law that would regulate the movement of goods within the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland) in partial violation of commitments made in the agreement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>This proposal has been strongly criticized by many British and international observers (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/john-major-and-tony-blair-johnson-must-drop-shameful-brexit-bill-or-be-forced-to-by-mps-cd9tkbfl3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-politics-54242235\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a>) as it would set a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/api\/files\/document\/print\/en\/statement_20_1607\/STATEMENT_20_1607_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dangerous precedent<\/a> in international relations and EU-UK relations; however, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/votes.parliament.uk\/Votes\/Commons\/Division\/836\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently approved<\/a> by the House of Commons, further complicating the already intricate picture.<\/p>\n\n<p>Such criticism has already led to some <a href=\"https:\/\/services.parliament.uk\/Bills\/2019-21\/unitedkingdominternalmarket\/documents.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposals to amend<\/a> the internal market bill, but the possibility of a &#8220;no deal&#8221; and a clash<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/api\/files\/document\/print\/en\/statement_20_1607\/STATEMENT_20_1607_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(including a judicial<\/a> one) between the EU and the UK is becoming much more concrete.<\/p>\n\n<p>We had summarized the possible <a href=\"https:\/\/euknow.it\/quali-sono-gli-effetti-della-brexit-sui-progetti-europei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">effects of the on European projects<\/a> here: all that remains is to prepare for all scenarios.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We resume one of this year&#8217;s &#8220;hot columns,&#8221; the Brexit process, which is experiencing some unexpected developments these days.
